ABSTRACT

Big Bang disruption: impacts on the financial markets

Investors remain in an environment of financial repression, despite good returns from most asset classes so far in 2017. Global interest rates remain at record lows with little urgent signs of sustained inflation causing a global “ hunt for income “. Dull global growth has meant that monetary policy has had to remain accommodative and cautious, leading many asset classes to become distorted and DM Sovereign bonds to offer “return-free risk” . As such, there is no safe income from cash and globally, investors are being forced either to “hunt for income” or to seek capital appreciation from equities where volatility and perception of risk is higher. Additionally, clients face precarious political and geo-political situations, which is hampering their ability to think longer term and to take sufficient risk to earn the returns they require.
Disruption and new technology are already influencing our economies and investment returns creating many winners and losers. Neil Dwane will consider how clients should best navigate these uncertain times waters and where investors should take risk to earn a return.
